BeatBlocks Live, interactive installation
Interactive music installations, built for public spaces
BeatBlocks Live turns ordinary building blocks into music using AI and computer vision, no screens, no controllers, no instructions. Installed at LEGOLAND® Discovery Centres in Berlin, Boston, Shanghai and Birmingham, at the Science Museum, and at V&A Dundee, and played by more than 200,000 visitors worldwide.

How it works
Place a block, hear a sound
Place a brick on a play surface and BeatBlocks Live turns it into music straight away. Move, add or rearrange the bricks and the music changes with them, the lights following the beat and no screen to distract. Most instruments take years to learn; everyone already knows how to play with LEGO®, so anyone can compose and collaborate in seconds.
-
Giving objects a digital life
A camera and computer vision read each brick, giving an ordinary piece of LEGO a digital life of its own. A single brick can be a drum, a piano or a synth; a handful or two makes an ensemble.
-
Four parts, one band
Each of the four play areas is a different part of the band, drums, bass, melody and vocals. One person can build up all four, or a group takes one each and plays together.
-
Every colour is an instrument
Within each part, the brick’s colour picks the instrument: kick, snare and hi-hat on the drums; electric, double and synth bass; different voices on the vocals.

Case study
Four sites, three continents
LEGOLAND Discovery Centres installed BeatBlocks Live at four locations, Berlin, Boston, Shanghai and Birmingham, as long-term interactive exhibits. High-footfall commercial attractions are an unforgiving environment: units run all day, are used by unsupervised children, and can’t afford staff time or downtime. BeatBlocks Live was specified for exactly this, a single power connection, no reliance on the venue’s network, no daily reset, and optional remote diagnostics if anything does go wrong.
Summer 2026
V&A Dundee
BeatBlocks Live ran at V&A Dundee from 11 July to 9 August 2026, a month-long summer hire in the Robertson Studio. More than 3,500 visitors played over the summer, running unattended throughout.
Read the V&A Dundee case studyBeatBlocks Live has been a wonderful way to gently introduce visitors of all ages to sound design and an understanding of how music can be prototyped live using a digital language.

Accessibility
Designed to be played by everyone
Most interactive exhibits assume a visitor who can see a screen, read an instruction and use a controller. BeatBlocks Live assumes none of those things.
Play works through touch, shape, sound and light: place a block, hear a sound, see the light respond. Stations are reachable from a seated position, at wheelchair height. Multiple people play the same surface at once, so blind and sighted, seated and standing, verbal and non-verbal visitors can make something together without anyone needing to explain the rules.
This isn’t an accessibility feature bolted onto a music exhibit. It’s where we began, testing instrument prototypes in 40 special schools across Scotland in 2006. Our team went on to design Skoog and Skwitch, accessible instruments retailed by Apple, and we’ve spent twenty years building for the people conventional instruments leave out.
Questions
Common questions
How much space does it need?
Allow roughly 2.5 to 3 square metres per station: the unit itself is about 1.3 metres square, plus room for players to gather around it. Stations are modular, so a single unit suits a gallery corner and four form a central attraction.
How long does installation take?
Under an hour. Compact modular shipping, a single power connection, and no network dependency.
How heavy is it, and how does it ship?
Fully assembled it weighs around 92kg. For courier shipping it packs into two flight cases; if we hand-deliver, we handle transport and setup ourselves, with or without venue assistance as agreed in advance.
How much power does it need?
A single standard socket. It draws around 45W in standby and up to about 90W in full use at volume.
Can it be moved once it is in?
Easily. Each console is on lockable castors and runs from a single plug, so staff can reposition it for an event, a clean or a gallery change and lock it back in place, with no reinstallation.
Does it need wi-fi or internet?
No, it doesn’t need any network to run. Remote diagnostics and updates are optional but recommended; if you want them, we can connect it either to your wi-fi or through a mobile-SIM router, whichever suits your venue.
Does it need staffing?
No. There is nothing to explain and nothing to reset between visitors. Cleaning is light soap and water, no solvents; we recommend the bricks are cleaned and disinfected regularly.
What happens if it breaks?
Remote diagnostics and support are available. Hires are maintained by us for the whole run; purchased units come with a warranty and an optional ongoing support agreement.
Can the sounds and styling be customised?
Yes. Sound sets can be tuned to your theme, and the stations can carry your own skins, wraps and branding, with instructions laser-etched in your house style. Optional usage analytics are available if you want to see how visitors play.
Is it only for music?
Music is where we started, but the technology underneath turns everyday objects into digital controls, so it lends itself to learning, storytelling and other hands-on, screen-free experiences too. If you have a bespoke idea in mind, tell us about it.
Is it accessible?
Yes, by design rather than adaptation. The brick surfaces sit at a height you can reach from a wheelchair or a seat, and the four surfaces face outward so several people play the same instrument at once, a wheelchair user, a standing adult and a child side by side. There is nothing to see on a screen, nothing to read and no controller to operate.
Can we hire before we buy?
Yes, and it’s the usual way to start. A short run is the simplest way to see how the exhibit performs with your own visitors before committing to a permanent installation.
How much does it cost?
It depends on how you book and at what scale, so we quote per venue rather than publishing a price list. The main variables are hire vs purchase, how many stations you need, the length of the run, and how much custom branding is involved. Tell us roughly what you have in mind and we’ll come back with indicative costs within two working days.
How can I get BeatBlocks at home?
There is a free BeatBlocks app for iPhone and iPad that turns ordinary LEGO and building bricks into music, the same idea in your pocket. There is also BeatBlocks Studio, a paid version with a fuller set of sounds and features. Both are on the App Store. See the BeatBlocks apps
